Artisan Confections*

Native of Arlington Jason Andelman was the pastry chef at TenPenh for five years. A Fine Arts major from the College of William & Mary and an alum of the Culinary Institute of America, he left to pursue an even more artistic adventure - opening his own chocolate shop, Artisan Confections. Now he's making chocolates that look like jewelry.

They're each a flat square or a shiny marble, painted with a colored design and made with fresh cream and butter and no preservatives. So even if you had the will to resist guzzling them all within hours of purchase, you should eat them by the date on their distinctive orange box. If you want to know how to make them, he gives hands-on and demonstration classes that last two hours.

Go to the gallery page to see some of the chocolates decorated with art he's commissioned from local artists. Designs are silk screened in cocoa butter onto acetate then transferred to the chocolates. So if you want a complete painting, buy as many as possible. Then consume your artwork piece by piece. Don't leave without buying at least a salted butter caramel...
