Asparagus - just so much grass...
Asparagus, like tomatoes, really should be eaten only in season and from a pick-your-own supplier. Otherwise, they're not much better than unsalted taco chips - though they're a lot healthier. They're just for dipping into something else that will give them the flavor they lack.
But outside France and England - or perhaps California - there aren't too many pick-your-own places.
So just stick to early spring for buying it, and if you see any at farmers markets, grab it. And you'll discover what I mean.
On the other hand, if you're going to make Todd Gray's Asparagus Soup or asparagus risotto (using the stalks finely sliced on the diagonal at the beginning of the cooking and saving the tips to steam in the very last ladle of stock), the amount you need will certainly allow a good degree of flavor to come through.
