Chew on This: Chicken abuse

You need a strong stomach to watch this Mercy for Animals video filmed undercover at a major California egg-factory farm. It was released May 6, 2008 as part of the Chicago-based non-profit's campaign to promote a California ballot measure to bar farms from confining pregnant sows, calves and hens in cages so restrictive they can't turn round.

It was taken with a camera hidden by one of the animal rights group's investigators who worked for two months at two facilities owned by Gemperle Enterprises, which supplies NuCal Foods Inc, the largest egg distributor in the western U.S. Its practices are not unlikely to be unknown in large egg and battery hen producing companies everywhere.

Around 9.4 billion egg-laying birds are killed each year to feed our appetite for chicken. Eating eggs from cage-free hens and buying chickens that have lived cage-free lives is not just better for the birds, but better for your own health.
