Chew On This: Oatmeal for breakfast keeps weight off

No excuse now to avoid oatmeal in favor of Lucky Charms. Lower energy dense breakfasts (that's stodge to you and me), high in nutrients, not only help maintain a healthy weight but help with better food choices during the rest of the day. So says the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in a new study. Stick to low energy density fruits, or oatmeal and other grains that soak up water (Chinese congee to start your day, anyone?) and you'll gain less weight.

Highest energy density foods means those that per gram of food contain more calories and include crackers, pretzels, fried foods and desserts.

The Mediterranean breakfast of a strong coffee knocked back standing at the zinc bar of your local cafe won't hack it. Though the rest of the Mediterranean diet does fine...

I've started eating oatmeal everyday and I'm telling you, it's changed my life! Sounds silly, I know - but there are so many ways to make it. I use the instant Irish Oats (by McCanns) and add dried cherries, a little brown sugar, and some sliced almonds. If you use the instant McCanns - a little tip: unless you like super dry oatmeal, follow the directions but add some extra water or a little milk when you cook it.

Loved the oatmeal tip. Went to my oatmeal shelf (I hate waiting half an hour in the morning) and saw that I can cook my Irish Cut the night before. Heaven!

Am now looking for a home-made night before muesli like they make in Switzerland.

Anyone out there got a recipe for Karen?
