Chew On This: The water diet!

Drink two glasses of water three times a day before meals and you could lose around 5 pounds, says a US study. That was our cheap dieting trick in high school and it didn't take a study to discover it. Still, I suppose it's nice to know it's official.

What's the water doing? It's filling you up, the scientists found. Well, duh. If you'd prefer a soda to water, reckon on it delivering around 10 teaspoons of sugar to your regime.

It's more sensible than the conclusion of scientists at Imperial College London who suggested in The American Journal of Cardiology that if you were served a statin with your cheeseburger and fries, you'd neutralize the detrimental effects of the junk food.

Are we going totally mad? The doctors argue that we continue to eat unhealthily. Therefore offering a statin with your burger and shake might protect against heart disease - while only adding a dime to the cost of the meal! Here's another idea: why not make the customer swallow two filling glasses of water with that added statin before voicing their order? They might then have less room for those fries.

Sounds like we're throwing in the towel over trying to educate people to eat healthily. Are scientists completely losing the plot? Or is there just too much loose money around for zany research projects?
