Chinese drinks with food
While tea is commonly drunk in the West with Chinese meals, in China it is served only once the meal is over.
Beer or chiu - the word for wine (or any fermented or distilled drink) - made from grapes or rice is what the Chinese drink. And spirits like the fiery and potent Mao Tai, distilled from kaoling (sorghum) are often served.
Two Chinese wines are likely to appear on Western restaurant menus. 'Dynasty', from Tianjin, the product of a Sino-French joint venture, is a medium-dry wine blended with a Muscat grape. 'Great Wall' is an apple-tasting wine distilled from grapes grown in Hebei province.
