Bird's Custard
Bird's Custard is another British oddity. It was invented in the 1830s by a Birmingham pharmacist, Alfred Bird, whose wife was allergic to eggs. So he came up with this egg-free custard. He's also supposed to be the man who brought us baking powder, revolutionizing home baking by doing so. It's hard to persuade a certain generation of Brits that apple pie, rhubarb crumble or gooseberry tart is better with Creme Anglaise than with a dollop of Bird's Custard.
You can buy Bird's Custard powder at The British Connection and other stores specializing in British goodies. It's also available ready-made in cans.
