Bird's Custard
Bird's Custard is another British oddity. It was invented in the 1830s by a Birmingham pharmacist, Alfred Bird, whose wife was allergic to eggs. So he came up with this egg-free custard. He's also supposed to be the man who brought us baking powder, revolutionizing home baking by doing so. It's hard to persuade a Brit that applie pie, rhubarb crumble or gooseberry tart is better with Creme Anglaise.
You can buy Bird's Custard powder at The British Connection and other stores specializing in British goodies. It's also available ready-made in cans.
