Ethiopian markets
18th Street NW is the site of a number of Ethiopian restaurants and supermarkets.
At no. 2202, Addisu Gebeya's sambusa, made with crisp phyllo-like pastry and filled with a spicy lentil mix, gives most other over-the-counter samosas a good run for their money. The small shop has a wide range of spices, lentils and pulses, aenjera and ambaasha breads, as well as incense, music tapes, books, some clothing and artifacts. Call 202 986 6013.
Merkado Market, at 2116 18th St, 202 483 9499, has an even larger stock and owner Tamiru Degefa will give out recipes and instructions to go with his spices.
Pratima Singh's Indian Super Market, 8107 Fenton St, Silver Spring, 301 589 8423, also stocks all the spices and ingredients for authentic Ethiopian cooking.
In Shemali's frozen cabinet (see Directory) you will find packets of frozen potato and pea samosas for deep frying - excellent for parties.
