Fresh organic herbs, European style

Fresh herbs sold like they are in Europe with their roots on have come to the Washington area supermarkets.

Shenandoah Growers in the Shenandoah Valley is packaging a range of fresh organic basil, chives, cilantro, dill, Italian parsley, mint and oregano complete with roots and thoroughly washed, in cellophane packages.

This doesn't mean they can be replanted. But it does mean they stay fresh longer. And stuck in a glass or vase by the stove, look pretty and are handy for sniping. They'll last for two weeks with regular changes of water if you haven't used them by then.

Look for them at Wegmans, Whole Foods and some Giant locations in DC, Maryland and Virginia.

If you're after quality dried spices and herbs, go to Penzeys Spice, 513 W. Broad St, Falls Church, 703 534 7770. They have a broad, though expensive, selection, with Smoked Spanish Paprika among some more unusual finds, and a broad range of peppercorns. They're very protective of their stock, though: they wouldn't let me take a photograph. So watch how you behave!
