Gō Công Supermarket

For all the grandeur of its name, Gō Công Supermarket is a miniscule affair. But it sells some interesting treasures. In the chill cabinet are pyramids of lontong - pressed rice that, chopped into cubes, are a seldom-served but crucial component of satay. There are spring rolls wrapped in banana leaves for removing to fry the rolls. Everyone there is helpful with instructions and explanations. In the photo are very strange Nems which I've written about before. They're not the expected rice-paper wrapped confection of beansprouts, carrots, pork or shrimp and more to be deep fried in fat. They're a square sausage packed inside a banana leaf whose only job, as with the spring rolls, is to wrap. The meat is then fried. But other items in the chill cabinet are more familiar to Western palates.

And you can pay a visit to the Lebanese Butcher on the same block while you're there...

Gō Công Supermarket, (no phone number available)  just down from the Lebanese Butcher, 113 E. Annandale Rd, Falls Church.
