Greengages
Greengages are a gloriously-scented golden plum, better to eat than candy. In the States, imports have tended to come from New Zealand. But now they're being grown in California and I've found them in Springfield in May, in the Afghan Mini Market, 6566 Backlick Rd, Sprngfield, 703 644 0186. It's a store filled with goods probably more familiar to us as Indian foods. There are raw cashews at a very cheap $4.99 a pound, equally cheap pistachios at the same price, loose seeds and candied peel by the pound (good to know about for Christmas cake bakers), pastries being baked in the back for sale in the front. Everyone is full of smiles and helpful and the owner very proud not just of his greengages, but of fine looking rhubarb.
If you can't get to Springfield, they can be ordered from The Orchard in New York City, minimum order 3 pounds. Call 212 431 1443.
