New Zealand eatery

EatWashington doesn't cover many restaurants. (I haven't got the money to review them properly...) And I haven't actually eaten at this one. But there are few enough sources for anything New Zealand in the capital I couldn't ignore Cassatt's. You'll have to review it for me. It calls itself a Kiwi Cafe  - and a Gourmet Bistro and art gallery whose pictures are for sale. Its card reads "Where restaurant meets coffee shop".

American Art Haupman (in the background) is the owner. He spent a year in New Zealand and was smitten. You want a "flat white"? It's what Kiwis call the latte they prefer. It's pumped with espresso and comes with a foam that's smoothed flat with a knife-like blade. On the dining menu Haupman offers New Zealand's unique green-lipped mussels, sauteed in garlic. (New Zealanders and other sore bone sufferers swear by them, harvested and processed into a homeopathic medicine, for their anti-inflammatory properties.) Kiwis missing meat pies will find them here, along with a New Zealand lamb steak.

Cassatt's, 4536 Lee Hwy, Arlington, 703 527 3330.
