Portuguese delicatessens
There are a number of markets that are favorites with people shopping for Portuguese ingredients. But they sell a wider range of European products, too.
The European Market sells eight different Portuguese olive oils and a variety of Portuguese pork products, including hams and sausages, as well as cheeses like queijo da Serra, queijo saloio, queijo serrinha, pinheiro manso. 17605 Redland Rd, Rockville, 301 417 0788.
A senior member of the Portuguese embassy recommends the European Foods, 2700 N. Pershing Street, 703 524 6800, which stocks everything from olive oil to bacalhau (salt cod fish.) Spring festivals in Portugal often include a whole roast suckling pig. If you are early enough in the day, you can sometimes find it there or at The European Market.
He also recommends the Broa de Milho, typical Portuguese Corn Bread sold so fast at Marvelous Market you may need to put in an order, along with Marquês de Borba - a wine from Alentejo, stocked by good liquor stores and sometimes by Whole Foods.
For Portuguese cheese like Serra, Azeitão, and São Jorge (from the Azores), go to Whole Foods' Georgetown store or Dean & DeLuca. But the selection at European Foods is extensive and interesting.
