Vegan bakeries
Hard to believe you can make a seductive cake without eggs or cream or butter. But there are a number of bakeries around town doing just that. And there's nothing homespun in how they look either, for those of you who think vegan means food that looks and tastes like a sock. But look at Cake Love's bundt cake, right. And that's their plainest creation.
Vegan baked goods are so delicious and so popular, in fact, that award winning Sticky Fingers (Best Bakery, Best Vegan Breakfast from Washington City Paper) that used to be downstairs off the street on 18th St. NW has had to move to large premises, at 1370 Park Rd, NW, 202 299 9700. Also try its vegan soft-serve ice cream.
Sweet Haven Bakery sells its cakes, cookies, brownies and breads at Dos Gringos, 3116 Mount Pleasant St. NW. 202 558 5291, Java Green, 1020 19th St. NW, and in Maryland at the Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op.
There are vegan options at Cake Love, the shop of ex-lawyer Warren Brown, cake enthusiast, that began at 1506 U St NW, 202 588 7100 (where it still exists) and blossomed into branches in Silver Spring at 935 Ellsworth Dr. near the corner of Ellsworth Drive and Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, 301 565 2253, in Arlington at 4150 Campbell Ave, (formerly South 28th St) Suite 105, 703 933 0099, in Baltimore at 2500 Boston St, Suite 4B, 410 522 1825 and, coming soon, at Tysons Corner Center (Tysons I) on the lower level, 703 442 4880,
Carmelo Bakery has a good choice of vegan desserts, cakes, danish pastries, and cookies at 1301 Georgia Ave, Wheaton, 301 942 9330.
Dama Bakery, 505 Columbia Pike, Arlington, 703 920 5620 bakes vegan cookies, baklava and cakes. You want vegan chocolate mocha, raspberry lime, and Italian rum? Come here. But check before you buy, because not everything on sale is vegan.
Natalia’s Elegant Creations is a European cafe and pastry shop with at least one vegan dessert daily, like a red velvet cupcake, a gingerbread cupcake, an apple-pumpkin tart, or blueberry crumb cake. It also serves vegan general food, like soup. Ask for their vegan cream cheese and margarine for your bagel. It's at 230 W. Broad St, Falls Church, 703 241 8040.
